2023 UCI track worlds day 6 recap

There was another packed house at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on day seven of the 2023 UCI track world championships set the scene to feature some of Canada’s best sprint and endurance riders who were looking to add to the previous day’s haul of three medals.

Women’s sprint

Both Kelsey Mitchell and Lauriane Genest looked to continue their journey through the sprint tournament. Micthell lost out to the defending world champion Mathilde Gros in the round of 16 while Genest made it to the quarter finals only to lose out to Great Britain’s own Emma Finucane.

James Hedgcock was also in tough and failed to move past the first round of the men’s Keirin while fellow sprinter Ryan Dodyk rode to a 16th place in the men’s 1 km TT.

Pemble medals again

Canada was well represented in the para events with the team of Mel Pemble, Kate O’Brien and Tarek Dahab placing 10th in the mixed C team sprint. Mel Pemble then went on to capture a silver medal in the Women’s C3 Scratch Race, her second medal performance of the games.

Ariane Bonhomme was Canada’s entry into the women’s points race. Even though this was Bonhomme’s first ever world championship bunch race, she kept pace with the bunch and even factored in a sprint, finishing mid-pack in 12th place.

The young duo of Dylan Bibic and Mathias Guillemette stepped into the 200-lap men’s madison looking to gain valuable experience in what is one of track cycling’s toughest races. The pace was unrelenting, and the top teams kept exchanging the lead right until the end. It all came down to the last sprint with the Netherlands taking the gold, just two points ahead of Great Britain and three points over Belgium. Canada did not finish tonight’s race.

Tomorrow will be the last day of the track events with Canada looking to finish off on a high note competing in the women’s omnium and men’s points race.
