47-year-old Quebec cyclist missing in Mexico

Steeve Poirier, a 47-year-old cyclist from Quebec, has been missing since Saturday in Nuevo Xcan, part of the municipality of Lazaro Cardenas in Quintana Roo, Mexico, according to both reports from CBC and TVA. His disappearance has caused great concern among his family and friends back in Canada.
Originally from Gaspé, Poirier was last seen on Saturday, during a 160-km ride that was supposed to end in Playa del Carmen later that afternoon. He never arrived, and while his phone was located, it was not found. The last known contact with Poirier was at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to Quebec media reports.

Desperate plea from family

Poirier’s family has posted a public plea on Facebook, asking for help from locals in Mexico or anyone with contacts who could assist in the search.

He had been vacationing in Playa del Carmen and set off for the ride without providing a detailed route. Although it has been established that he stopped at convenience store during his journey, his exact whereabouts remain unclear. Friends and family have visited local hospitals in hopes of finding any clues.

Working with authorities

André Poirier, Steeve’s uncle, who is also in Mexico, said that efforts to find Steeve are ongoing. He said that they are working with local police. The family, he said, is understandably anxiously waiting for news.

Authorities are trying to access important data from Poirier’s Garmin GPS device, though to get this information ,means they need authorization. “It’s a matter of life or death,” said André Poirier, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Poirier is described as having fair skin, being bald, with a mole near his eye, and wearing a cross necklace. He was last seen wearing a navy-blue cycling jersey and a black MAAP helmet. His phone was located near Ignacio Zaragoza, and the family is urging anyone with information to contact the Quintana Roo Search Commission via Facebook or at 998-336-2579.
