Keegan Swenson out of Cape Epic after “getting smoked by a car door”

Keegan Swenson and Carolin Schiff win Unbound, Haley Smith 7th, Adam Roberge 8th

Specialized’s rock-star signing is having a rough start to 2026. Keegan Swenson didn’t look like his usual self last week at Santa Vall. After the Spanish gravel race, put on by Traka, Swenson confirmed he was still feeling the effects of “getting smoked by a car door” during training.

Despite that, the U.S. racer made it all the way to Cape Town, South Africa before finding out for sure that there were problems he couldn’t ignore. He had headed south to train with his Specialized Off-Road teammate, Matt Beers, who he was partnered up with for the upcoming Cape Epic. The two were one a few favourites going into the iconic XC stage race.

Swenson says MRI results confirmed his iliac crest is fractured as well as “some other complications,” though he did not detail what those complications might be. Before you go search “What is the iliac crest,” it’s the upper and outermost part of the hip bones.

“I was optimistic things were okay after that collision with the car door but after racing Santa Vall with quite a bit of pain (and still struggling to walk),” Swenson shared, “I had a feeling something might actually be wrong.”

A fractured hip sounds plenty painful to race on for two days of gravel. A full week of full-pace cross country at the Cape Epic would have been absolutely brutal.

The reigning XC marathon world champion is now returning Stateside to Tucson, Arizona for follow up and to start the recovery process. Sea Otter, and the start of the Life Time Grand Prix, is just under two months away. That’ll be a quick turn-around if Specialized’s endurance specialist wants to reclaim that title.
