Chaos at Liège-Bastogne-Liège: Remco Evenepoel part of large group 4 minutes up road after crash

Some wild scenes early on at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Remco Evenepoel has slipped into a major early move, joining a breakaway of 50-plus riders, including Alpecin-Premier Tech’s Hugo Houle and EF-Education First’s Michael Leonard.

Notably absent: Tadej Pogačar and Paul Seixas, leaving UAE Emirates XRG and Decathlon CMA CGM to control the chase behind.

Egan Bernal is up the road, though Pogačar still has support there in Domen Novak. Evenepoel isn’t isolated either, with Nico Denz alongside him. The gap is pushing four minutes.

The group is stacked, featuring riders like Quinten Hermans, Laurens De Plus, Frank van den Broek, Gijs Leemreize, Pascal Eenkhoorn and Dylan van Baarle.

There are still 180 km left and multiple climbs, but Evenepoel is sitting in, enjoying the ride with a massive buffer on Pogačar.

Coverage will begin for the men’s race on FloBikes.com at 6:10 a.m. EDT and the women’s at 10:40 a.m. EDT.

As well as Houle, EF-Education First’s Michael Leonard is racing. In the women’s, many more Canadians. Lidl-Trek’s Isabella Holmgren, Mara Roldan (Team Picnic PostNL), Visma-Lease a Bike’s Sarah Van Dam, as well as the St Michel – Preference Home – Auber93 duo of national champ Alison Jackson and Clara Émond

Who knows, the men’s race may already be over for Seixas and the world champ.

Best laid plans, all that.
