A cyclist who suffered a cardiac arrest during the Liège–Bastogne–Liège Challenge has died.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. Saturday on the Col de Lamormenil in Manhay, where Colin Moses collapsed mid-ride on the demanding course.
Emergency crews responded quickly, and a helicopter from Bra-sur-Lienne airlifted him to the University Hospital of Liège in critical condition. The situation was serious from the outset, according to TV Lux. “The prognosis for this English cyclist was grim,” said Olivier Pirotte, operational coordinator of the helicopter medical centre.
Organizers have yet to issue an official statement.
Moses, from Oldfield, West Yorkshire, died after suffering what friends described on social media as a “massive” heart attack during the sportive, according to road.cc.
The death comes after another recent fatal incident at the Tour of Flanders sportive, reported by Het Nieuwsblad. A 51-year-old British rider died after collapsing near the Hotond climb, while two others were resuscitated in separate incidents along the course.
Organizer Gert Van Goolen said the incidents cast a shadow over what is usually a celebratory day for amateur riders.
“This is the last thing you want as an organization,” he said.
Tragedy also struck last year’s We Ride Flanders sportive. One Dutch and one French rider died during the event.
The French participant was later identified as former Cofidis rider Stéphane Kraft, who, according to RMC Sport, died after suffering an epileptic seizure on the Oude Kwaremont. Kraft was 45.
