Late breakaway holds off peloton at the line for Itzulia Women’s win

Late breakaway holds off peloton at the line for Itzulia Women's win

Saturday’s second stage of the Itzulia Women’s tour finished in wonderfully dramatic fashion. Dominika Włodarczyk and Shirin van Anrooij were in a tactical battle after escaping six km from the finish in a late breakaway. The peloton, though, was closing in fast. On most occasions recently, that’s seen the peloton do its thing and catch the break. And they did catch Anrooij. Włodarczyk, though? She held on for a thrilling victory, finishing just bike lengths ahead of the chasing pack.

Sunday’s win is the first Women’s WorldTour victory for Włodarczyk, leaving the Polish rider as the best placed of her UAE Team ADQ squad at Itzulia in sixth.

Mischa Bredewold of Team SD Worx-Protime, winner of Itzulia’s opening stage, finishes second. Van Rooij holds on for third.

Magdeleine Vallieres is the top Canadian finisher on the day, placing 11th for EF Education-Oatly. That moves the Canadian world champion up one spot on GC to sit in 12th overall. Her teammate Alexandra Olstad and Picnic-PostNL’s Mara Roldan, continuing her return to racing after an unfortunate series of injuries including behing hit by a car in training, make up the Canadian contingent contesting Itzulia.

The 2026 Itzulia Women’s tour concludes on Sunday with a 113.1-km stage from Donostia to Donostia, taking in three categorized climbs along the way.
