On Thursday, Campagnolo debuted the Hyperon Ultra, a light-weight, performance wheelset. The new hoops sit at the top of the Italian’s product range. Although similar to the Bora wheels, there are some different characteristics. Weighing just 1240g, the new set is aimed for the high performance cyclist looking for wheels that are not only light, but feel responsive when sprinting or climbing out of the saddle.
The Hyperon Ultra wheelset are made using Campagnolo’s proprietary method, the handmade ultra-light carbon process.Campagnolo says that it balances the carbon fibre and resin, resulting in increased stiffnes.
The name Hyperon is a play on Greek mythology. Campagnolo says that the wheel tries to accomplish the golden ratio of asethetics, performance and stability.
You may have seen these wheels already on the bikes of some WorldTour riders. Pros have tested the wheels this season, and Campagnolo said that a few races have already been won on them.
The rim profile is 37 mm, with a width of 21 mm. The result is a stiff wheel but with weight savings. The Hyperon Ultra hubs come with the Head-2-Bay total tension management system,
created to prevent spoke inelastic shearing and to ensure optimal power istransferred to the road. The spokes feature a ball in socket format, which creates micromovemets when a rider hits bumps int he road. That way the spokes are never weakened, and it can dissipate extra tension on the wheel.
The Hyperon Ultra wheelset is finished with Campagnolo’s C-Lux coating creating a high-gloss surface.
