Tom Pidcock finished safely in the bunch in Stage 4 of the Tour de France and it looked like it didn’t take much effort on his part. He returned to Strave to post his numbers on the 185-km stage, and an eagle-eyed Twitter user noticed his heart rate. Katie posted his HR data, to the astonishment of cycling fans. He averaged just 99 bpm, and at one point it went as low as 47! That’s a low resting heart rate for someone who is just sitting on the couch. Pidcock, perhaps not liking the hullabaloo about his ticker on Twitter, then edited his Strava to remove the info, but as we know, the Internet is forever.
The Ineos-Grenadiers rider has been relatively quiet thus far in the Tour, although he did have a big attack in the final kilometres in Stage 2 and ultimately finished fourth. Stage 5 is a day that he’s targetting, which happens to be the first serious mountain day as the race heads for the Pyrenees. There’s a few tough climb: the Col de Soudet, a 15.2 km climb that averages 7.2 per cent, with sections that get up to 12.5 per cent.
Pretty sure his heart rate may get over 99 on Wednesday.
