Beloved Quebec cyclist Serge Lacroix dies at 64

On Dec. 24, long-time cyclist from Magog, Que., and member of the cycling industry, Serge Lacroix, passed away.

Lacroix was a national team rider on several occasions in the 1980s and continued riding his entire life. He worked as a sales manager for Specialized Canada but remained active in local races and events.

The Gravel Bikepacking Challenge remembered Lacroix, noting his passion for helping other riders. In the summer of 2024, he rode a motorcycle to support participants in the event. A Facebook post shared an example of his spirit: About 90km into the race, an athlete crashed, and after attempting unsuccessful repairs, Lacroix improvised by converting the bike into a fixed gear to allow the athlete to continue. He then retrieved his own bike so the athlete could complete the event.

Louis Garneau remarked, “Serge was a great racer – but also a very nice guy. Rest in peace.”

In 2023, Lacroix won the GBC, completing 500 km in 22 hours and 51 minutes. Lacroix began cycling in 1974 and quickly found success. He was the Champion of Quebec in 1983 and represented Canada at the Pan American Games in Venezuela. At the end of his career, he was named Athlete of the Year in all sports in the Eastern Townships.

On behalf of the entire staff of Canadian Cycling Magazine, we extend our sincere condolences to his many friends and family.
