New pedal system turns your pedals upside down

New pedal system turns your pedals upside down

9point8 have gone ahead and flipped the script on traditional pedals. Instead of putting the studs on the pedals, they’ve stuck them to your feet. The result? Grip on your pedals and the ground, without the classic bloodied shins or that whoops-I-just-slipped-on-a-wet-root moment. We’ve seen some radical redesign on pedals lately, but this one’s something entirely different.

How it works

The iNVRS system (patent pending) features pedals with a proprietary rubber-topped surface designed to grab onto carbide-tipped studs that screw into your favorite shoes or boots. There’s also an option for studded SPD cleats if clipless is your jam. The studs grip the rubber pedals securely but still allow you to confidently stomp around on slick surfaces like snow, ice or wet roots.

Why it’s awesome (is it though?)

Bloody shins, begone: With the removed pedal studs, there’s nothing sharp waiting to shred your legs after a missed step.
All-weather, all-season grip: From mud to snow and even ice, your feet stay locked in on the bike and secure when you’re off it.
Winter warrior approved: Stud your coziest winter boots, and suddenly riding on icy trails doesn’t feel like an extreme sport within an extreme sport.
Kid-friendly: Without sharp pedals, your little shredders can learn to ride without turning their bikes into weapons (just their feet instead).

The gear

Pedals: Rubber-topped with a durable polymer body, alloy axle and premium bearings. Designed to grip your studded shoes. Heck, yopu can even stud up your flip-flops!
Studs: Choose from screw-in carbide-tipped studs for flats or studded SPD cleats for your clipless setup.
Price: The iNVRS pedals are available now at 9point8.ca for $101 (studs sold separately).

Winter riding

Certainly it would seem the most practical application of this pedal is winter riding; you probably don’t want to walk into your local coffee shop with spiked shoes after a ride. But in the winter, when walking around is slippery, having those studded shoes could come in handy. Time will tell how successful this product is, and we always appreciate companies rethinking the status quo.
