New bike lane, traffic light in Victoria aims to ease congestion

Alberta government reacts to Ontario bike lane debacle: ‘We’re watching’

Victoria drivers should anticipate some delays this winter as work begins on a key section of Blanshard Street. However, there is an upside to it all once it’s all finished, according to city officials as reported by the Times Colonist.

The project promises smoother traffic flow and safer streets once complete,

Construction is underway to extend protected bike lanes in both directions between Caledonia Avenue and Kings Road.

There will also be a new traffic signal to help streamline vehicle movement. The improvements also include a slip road that allows southbound traffic to bypass the Caledonia intersection. That should ease congestion for trucks and commuters alike, city officials say.

Victoria’s Ross Kenny says the project is scheduled to finish by summer. “The goal is to make it safer for cyclists. And more efficient for trucks accessing the city’s industry, arts and innovation district,” Kenny said. “We’re planning for future growth. This ensures that the area can handle increased traffic as development continues.”

The changes come in anticipation of major mixed-use projects in the district. They include a residential and commercial development near Capital Iron by Reliance Properties as well as a First Nations-led project at Government and Pembroke streets.

Kenny said that the new traffic patterns and bike lanes are designed to support both safety and efficiency. “It’s not just about moving cars today. It’s about making sure industry and residents can get where they need to go for years to come,” he said.

Motorists are encouraged to plan for minor delays. However, city planners say the long-term benefits will make the wait worthwhile.
