Abus launches GameChanger 2.0 aero helmet

On Wednesday, Abus launched its new aero helmet, the GameChanger 2.0. Developed with the help of the Spanish Movistar team, it was based on the previous iteration, the GameChanger 1.0. That helmet has been worn at the all the big WorldTour races, including the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia.

The GameChanger 1.0 has been on the heads of pros since 2017. Aero helmets became normative in racing, part of the ever-increasing race for marginal gains. The 2.0 resembles the earlier version but with some notable changes.

More Aero

GameChanger 2.0 has undergone some considerable aero enhancements. It now incorporates a wider Kamm tail, resulting in an 11 per cent increase in the helmet’s aero profile length. According to Abus, as a result of testing conducted in wind tunnels and on tracks has demonstrated that the updated GameChanger 2.0 offers riders a significant aerodynamic edge, particularly within the speed range of modern racing, ranging from 46 to 52 km/h. This advantage is attributed to the helmet’s refined aerodynamic shape, which has been specifically adapted to optimize performance in these speed ranges.

New ventilation system

The perforated side pieces are gone, but instead there is a larger slot vent positioned over the forehead. According to Abus this eyebrow vent will give a 32 per cent increase in airflow towards the front of the helmet.
The other big update involves the rear ventilation system. Abus has redesigned the exit port, replacing it with a larger star-shaped configuration. The helmet brand says that this increases the outflow of exhaust air by 20 per cent compared to the 1.0. With the rejigged venting, Abus says it should be easier to attach your eyewear in other the front or rear vents as well.

Better fit

The strap design has been updated as well. There is a broader anchor at the point where the two 12mm wide straps come together. Abus claims that this modification contributes to maintaining the helmet securely in place. There is also a MIPS option available, which incorporates a Fidlock magnetic buckle, which offers easy fastening and release of the helmet.

The GameChanger 2.0 is available in 11 different colors and three sizes (S, M, L). The weight of the helmet is 260g (S), 265g (M) and 275g (L).
