We are firing up our searches to find you more hot deals for Amazon Prime Day. APD, as those in the trade call it, now runs for four whole days, and Amazon has a tendency to trickle deals out, so there will undoubtedly be more fresh finds today to usurp the stellar deals of mere hours go.

Suffering

It’s a term that is widely used, often celebrated, in cycling parlance; synonymous with effort, hurting, trying your hardest, and fighting to win. It’s rolled off by commentators and onlookers without a second thought.

But to many, it devalues the real definition of the word.

Former professional, Michael Hutchinson, recently expressed his dislike of the term, summing it up nicely with “if you volunteer for it, you don’t get to call it suffering,” and later adding “if you think you’re suffering you don’t have enough problems in your life.”

Without straying too far away from cycling, there’s real, undeniable suffering going on in the world, and cycling up a hill as hard as you can is not that.

Regardless of Hutchinson’s – or anyone else’s – opinion, though, the act of suffering (in our watered-down definition of the word) can make for some incredible imagery. The pain faces of Pogačar and Van der Poel going toe to toe for the yellow jersey in an uphill sprint at the Tour de France this week will be etched in my mind for years to come.
