Autopsy reveals cause of 21-year-old pro’s sudden death

Simone Roganti, the 21-year-old Italian cyclist, died on August 25th from a heart attack. An autopsy has revealed it was caused by a heart arrhythmia.

His heart suddenly stopped at 10:30 p.m. at his parents’ home in Spoltore. They immediately alerted emergency services, and doctors tried everything to revive him, but nothing could be done. He died in his parents’ arms.

Promising rider, headed for Dutch team in 2025

Roganti was racing for the Continental team MG Kvis – Colors for Peace after riding for two seasons with UM Tools D’Amico. His best result in 2024 was second place in the overall standings of the Giro del Veneto at the end of June. He finished 7th in the Italian under-23 Championship.

Following his death, local prosecutor Luca Sciarretta ordered an autopsy to determine the cause according to Italian media. The autopsy revealed that his death was caused by a fatal arrhythmia. It was most likely a result of a genetic factor, according to pathologist Cristian D’Ovidio.

Genetic factors blamed for death

Cardiac arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat caused by abnormal electrical signals in the heart. It can make the heart beat too fast, too slow, or erratically. Arrhythmias range from harmless to life-threatening, potentially causing symptoms like dizziness, chest pain, or fainting, and can lead to cardiac arrest or stroke.

Roganti came from a cycling family; his uncles, Fabrizio and Federico, were both cyclists. Federico works as a motodriver for Giro d’Italia organizer RCS.

In 2025, Roganti was set to ride with the Dutch team TDT – Unibet Cycling Team.
