The B.C. government’s new e-bike rebate goes into effect today. The limited program will provide rebates up to $1,500 for the purchase of a new e-bike.
Rebate support level is based off of income, with available amounts ranging from $350 to a maximum of $1,500. Customers must be over the age of 19 and the bikes must have a purchase price of at least $2,000 before tax to be eligible for the rebate.
The B.C. government is funding the new active transportation rebate up to $6 million. That amount could cover up to 9,000 people. Retailers expect there to be significant demand, meaning that the available pot of funds could run out quickly.
The rebate is part of B.C.’s active transport initiative.
“E-bikes are becoming commonplace in B.C. as a convenient alternative to motor-vehicle trips, but their price can put them out of reach for people,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “By making rebates available and basing the rebate amount on income, we can make e-bikes and clean transportation more affordable and accessible for everyone.”
BC Cycling Coalition supported the government in the development of the rebate.
“E-bikes add a new dimension to everyday travel, even in rural communities,” Michael Koski, executive director of the BC Cycling Coalition, said in a statement. “For those struggling with the cost of a car, this funding will provide wider access to a transportation option that is affordable, efficient and eco-friendly. E-bikes make cycling accessible to a wider range of people, improve personal health and help smaller communities by making more people mobile.”
Eligable e-bikes must be purchased from a participating retailer. Buyers must prove their income to determine rebate level through the rebate website.
BCCC is very happy to have been a part of the consultation with government and other organizations on this, and for those eligible, please check out our e-bike education grant for small and rural communities!https://t.co/EQsddedZ8ahttps://t.co/ZMOOLerSrE
