Jonas Vingegaard returned to Denmark to a hero’s welcome after his Tour de France victory. The day after his fellow Dane Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig won an emotional stage at the Tour de France Femmes, Vingegaard was greeted by thousands of fans in Copenhagen.
“It’s fantastic. I’m almost completely speechless. I don’t know what to say,” Vingegaard said, as he stepped onto the balcony to be greeted by spectators.
Vingegaard is only the second Dane to win Tour since compatriot Bjarne Riis (cough, asterisk) became the first to do so in 1996.
The Jumbo-Visma rider and his family were flown by private plane to Denmark. When the plane entered Danish air space, two F-16 fighter jets escorted them as per a long-standing tradition honour champion Danish athletes when they return.
For the record, Denmark has 5.831 million people, so please forgive the hyperbolic headline. It’s still pretty cool to see so many people cheering him on.
