Canadian juniors shine in Lenzerheide downhill qualifying

Qualification is done for Saturday’s World Cup Dh in Lenzerheide and 11 Canadians are through to the finals. It was the juniors leading the results for Canada, in both men’s and women’s races, on Friday in Switzerland.

Junior Men

Jackson Goldstone (Syndicate) qualified second in the junior men’s race behind Jordan Williams (Madison Saracen). The Canadian rode steady from split-to-split, while Williams appeared to build speed down the Lenzerheide track. In the end, just 0.009 seconds separated Williams and Goldstone, setting the stage for an excellent race Saturday.

Tristan Lemire (Commencal/Muc-Off) followed close behind in fourth. Whistler’s Wei Tien Ho had an excellent day in qualifying, placing fifth. Tegan Cruz (RockShox Trek) qualifies 12th, Bodhi Kuhn (Rossland) 19th and Elijah Barron (Gravity MTB) 20th, putting six Canadians through to finals. Cole Stinson just misses out, while Coen Skrypnek pulled out after the first split.

Junior Women

Gracey Hemstreet (Norco Factory Team) seeds second in the junior women’s downhill. The Sunshine Coast racer continues her season-long battle with Pheobe Gale (Canyon-FMD), who seeds first.

Joy Attalla of Fernie, B.C. seeds 12th in her first European appearance of 2022.

Elite Men and Women

Two familiar names topped the qualifying results in the elite races. Amaury Pierron (Commencal Muc-Off) and Camille Balanche (Dorval AM) posted the day’s fastest times. The biggest news, though, is back in seventh place. Rachel Atherton (Atherton Racing) qualifies for her first World Cup final since 2019. Dakotah Norton (Intense) in second and Luca Shaw (Canyon Cllctv) in fifth also post the U.S.A.’s best elite men’s qualifying in a while.

Mark Wallace (Canyon cllctv) leads the Canadian results in 14th. Finn Iles (Specialized) qualifies 19th on his prototype Specialized Demo. Lucas Cruz (Norco Factory Team) joins them in the final with a 49th in qualifying. Seth Sherlock (Intense) misses qualifying by just 0.679 seconds.
