On Friday, concerned colleagues reported the absence of 50-year-old Olympian Daniela Larreal Chirinos from her shift at the hotel where she worked. This led authorities to check her apartment in Las Vegas. On Friday, police discovered that she had died and is believed to have been in the apartment since Sunday, August 11.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Larreal may have died from choking on food. According to reports from Fox News Mexico, the post-mortem examination revealed solid food remnants in her windpipe, indicating asphyxiation. However, the official cause of death has yet to be confirmed by the police.
Larreal was a celebrated Venezuelan athlete, having competed in five Olympic Games: Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and London 2012. Her career also included two silver medals at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and three gold medals and one silver at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador.
