Giro debutante Georg Steinhauser of EF Education EasyPost finished off his latest escape effort to finally win a stage of the Giro d’Italia, at Passo Brocon. The son of former pro Tobias Steinhauser left the peloton with the day’s breakaway, and survived alone after leaving Trek’s Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier and Israel-Premier Tech’s Marco Frigo behind for good on the Passo Brocon’s first ascent. He was away with nobody in sight for the final climb, and while the GC contenders briefly made some noise at the end, with UAE’s Tadej Pogacar extending his lead by taking second place, it was a day for the EF climber to make his name for himself.
Selva di Val Gardena – Passo Brocon 159 km
Pray for nice weather (unlikely) for what might be the prettiest mountain stage this year. All Dolomite goodness.
Estimated finish time: 16:50-17-30 CEST
Dolomite Dynamite of the Day: Damiano Caruso
Betting we get today instead what we didn’t get yesterday.
(This looks all set for a breakaway so we’re looking for a strong climber on decent form who isn’t threatening anyone on GC and who isn’t tied up with other team duties.)
