28 years of racing downhill is an absolutely stunning stat. Racing in 28 world championships – his first at just 15 years of age – is almost beyond belief. But Greg Minnaar is still here and, as we saw in Les Gets, still among the best in the world. But the South African icon confirmed today what he has hinted at for months: 2024 will be his last world championships race.
Minnaar posted his announcement online:
“Over the last almost 3 decades, I’ve raced against the best our sport has seen, and they’ve all pushed me to transform myself over and over again. It has been an absolute privilege and honor, and I’m grateful for every person who has been a part of this journey with me.
It was a dream come true to win the World Championship in South Africa, in the city where I was born and raised. 11 years later, the wheel has come full circle, and here in Andorra, in the parish I now live, my heart swells with gratitude and bittersweet emotion as I gear up for my 28th and final World Championship.
I owe a huge thanks to my wife, family, team, friends, and fans. Your support has meant the world to me. The sacrifices you made kept me going when things got tough, and I’m still amazed at what we were able to achieve together… while having a good time!” – Greg Minnaar
Don’t shed a tear to see the G.O.A.T. go just yet. There’s still more World Cups this year. Longer term, it sounds like Minnaar is still pretty stoked on new ways to be involved in Norco’s World Cup and developments squads, beyond just as an athelte.
Still, Norco Race Division is ready to see Minnaar’s worlds career off in style. The team has a very special bike built up for their star rider.
