It may be spring Classics season, but the Itzulia Basque Country, nestled among the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, provides a home for the stage racers of the peloton in early April.
The six-day race tackles some of the toughest hills – and there are a lot of them – in the Basque Country in northern Spain, and this year’s 62nd edition, which runs from Monday, April 3 to Sunday, April 8, is no exception.
Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) headlines the start list of the race from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Eibar, while Dani Martínez (Ineos Grenadiers) is back to defend his overall title won on the Arrate last year.
Aside from Vingegaard and Martínez, there are GC men aplenty lining up at the race. Basque representation comes via Mikel Landa, Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), and Ion Izagirre (Cofidis).
Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe), and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) form a strong south American contingent at the race.
Elsewhere, look out for David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla), Enric Mas (Movistar), and UAE Team Emirates duo Adam Yates and Juan Ayuso.
