Race preview
The Tour de France had a few days of detente in the tight competition between leader Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and second-placed Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) as the race heads into the Alps.
The breakaway stayed clear on stage 12 with Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) taking a fine solo victory on a stage that had little effect on the Tour de France current GC standings.
Hardly a day has gone by where there hasn’t been some testing between the Tour de France contenders but the top two head into the high mountains separated by 17 seconds.
In other competitions, Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) is looking to defend his lead in the mountains classification, while Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Quickstep) has a neary unassailable lead in the points classification.
Stage 13 brings the riders into the high mountains with a real sting in the tail of a short but challenging 137.8 kilometre stage from Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne to the top of the Grand Colombier – a 17.4 kilometre climb and the second hors-categorie summit finish after stage 9 to Puy de Dôme.
