Sure, winning one Grand Tour is great, but what about all three? In the same year? Trine Marie Hansen, the wife of 2023 Tour de France champ, Jonas Vingegaard, says that it is her special hope that he tries to do them all. In an interview with Danish outlet, B.T. she says she knows it would mean even more days away from home, but he should try since he has the fitness to do so.
“My quiet dream is that Jonas riders all three grand tours in one year,” she said.”I think he should utilize his current level to do so.”
Jonas Vingegaard: ‘I don’t take anything I would not give to my daughter’
Although no male cyclist has ever won the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España in the same year, there’s a short list of riders who have won them in their careers. Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault have won all three Grand Tours.
“From the start of his professional career, I have told him to do his best. Because otherwise it’s not worth it, and then we adapt to it for the years it goes on,” she told B.T. “Then we have 100 per cent family time when he’s not travelling. It’s about having your focus where you are, and then it goes.”
Once again, about a zillion Danes showed up to celebrate Jonas Vingegaard
Vingegaard is, however, lining up for the 2023 Vuelta a España. “I will attempt to contend for the general classification, and Primož Roglič will do the same. Undoubtedly, we will both serve as team leaders,” he said after the final stage of the Tour de France.
There has never been a Danish winner of the Spanish stage race, and given Vingegaard’s ride at the Tour, it’s possible 2023 may be the year that it happens.
