After the tragic death of Gino Mäder at the Tour de Suisse, the Justdiggit environmental charity has decided to establish a regreen area in his memory. In 2021, Mäder played a vital role in raising funds for Justdiggit’s African reforesting campaign. He pledged to contribute one Euro every day for each rider he surpassed in the Vuelta a España. Additionally, he committed to donating 10 Euro for every rider he outperformed in the final overall classification.
Mäder died on Stage 5 after a terrible crash on a descent. His team, Bahrain-Victorious posted the news.

“It is with deep sadness thatwe have to announce the passing of Gino Mäder. Following a very serious crash during the Tour de Suisse, Gino lost his battle to recover from the severe injuries he sustained,” the statement read. “The high-speed incident occurred on the final descent of Thursday’s stage, and the 26-year-old was resuscitated at the scene by medical staff. They also performed CPR, before being airlifted.” The Swiss rider would later die in the hospital.
Mäder was passionate about regreening the planet
In a statement, Justdiggit posted about its initiative to remember the rider. “What Gino Mäder touched many hearts and minds all over the world with his actions, became apparent to us over the last few days. We received over 700 donations that were done out of his name from fans honouring his legacy. We are deeply moved by this response within the cycling community to honour Gino’s wish to regreen our planet and are grateful for the collective support for our land restoration projects,” the post read. “Therefore, we have decided to use the donations to regreen an area that will be dedicated to Gino. At this moment it’s still too early to give any updates about the specifics and location, but we will share this with you soon.”
