Tijl De Decker, 22, who will ride at the WorldTour level under the Lotto Destiny team, collided in a training session that left him with significant injuries. According to a report in Het Nieuwsblad, the incident led to substantial blood loss, and he currently remains in a coma in the hospital.
De Decker is one of the strongest Belgian prospects, having won the u-23 Paris-Roubaix earlier in 2023. During his workout, De Decker collided forcefully with the rear of a car, resulting in serious injuries that required his immediate transfer to a hospital in Lier. There, he underwent a surgical procedure to address the extent of his injuries. Subsequently, on the same day, he was moved to the University Hospital of Antwerp for further medical attention and evaluation. The medical team at the University Hospital of Antwerp will continue to assess his condition in the coming days.
A spokeswoman for the Lier police, Magalie Derboven, elaborated on the incident. “The collision took place on the public road, outside the city center. The cyclist was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. It remains to be seen how his condition evolves. A traffic expert from the public prosecutor’s office has arrived at the scene; an investigation into the exact circumstances is ongoing. I can confirm that a passenger car was involved in the collision.”
The Lotto Dstny team also posted about the incident. “We can confirm that Tijl De Decker had an accident during training. He was taken to the hospital. Please respect everyone’s privacy and do not bother their friends and family.”
Tijl De Decker was involved in a crash today. He was brought to a local hospital where he underwent surgery.
Later today he was transported to the UZA.
