Marta Cavalli had a terrible crash stage 2 of the Tour de France Femmes, and what made it even worse was the sight of Australian Nicole Frain seemingly not slowing down and colliding with her.
In the video below, you can see Cavalli going down, and then a second later Frain appears to be going full-tilt when she collides with the riders on the asphalt, and is sent flying.
Cavalli would get riding again, but the team thought it was better for her to stop and go to the hospital, and withdraw from the Tour de France Femmes.
Manhy were baffled with what had happened. Why didn’t Frain slow down? Some wondered if she had a malfunction with her brakes. Turns out, it wasn’t that at all. She thought she could slip through the chaos without slowing down.
The Australian rider would later apologize for her actions. “I thought I was going to make it through. And then there was a rider right in front and, yeah, you’ve probably seen the replay,” Frain told Eurosport.
She then explained what happened, from her perspective. “I thought I saw a hole, but I couldn’t pass through it. I am a bit disappointed. I thought I could go through it. It was fast, so I didn’t miss the crash.” She regrets doing so. “Naturally, this was never my intention, and I am sorry for those involved. I am sore as well and will monitor how I feel. I’m lucky I could get back on my bike,” she said.
