Racer passes away after crash at U.S. downhill national championships

U.S. downhill national championships were marred by tragedy over the weekend when a racer crashed and died due to his injuries. The crash took place Sunday, Aug. 4 at Ride Rock Creek. The rider was attended to quickly by medical staff but still succumbed to his injuries.

There was an immediate outpouring of grief and support from the North American riding community for Scott Huntley, the deceased rider. The downhill community is a tightknit one and Huntley was, by all accounts, a well-loved member of that community. Countless riders shared stories of meeting Huntley or being helped by him, whether they had met him before or not.

Easter States Cup shared that it will retire Huntley’s race plate, #401, as well as a tribute to the popular rider:

“A friend to all, an always positive energy, and forever a part of our hearts. Those who knew Scott will tell stories of his legend for many years to come. His spirit will live on in the stories we tell, the photos we see, and the memories we have. Scott was the ultimate competitor, and yet still, he’d make time to help anyone who needed it. His smile and attitude were contagious, his humor always on point and his love for the sport will all be missed dearly.”

While deaths are rare in mountain biking, this tragic incident is a sad reminder that our sport can be dangerous. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones affected by this weekend’s loss.
