Sinking ship? Another top rider leaves INEOS Grenadiers

Rod Ellingworth abruptly resigns from Ineos Grenadiers

Another rider has left INEOS Grenadiers–which at one point was one of the most dominant cycling teams in recent years. With multiple wins at the Tour de France and other Grand Tours, INEOS (and previously Sky) was considered the New York Yankees of pro cycling. Now, riders seem to be leaving right and left. It was only a few weeks ago that star road, MTB and ‘cross rider Tom Pidcock announced he wasn’t renewing.

Elia Viviani, an Olympic gold medallist on the track, is leaving INEOS Grenadiers, though his next move remains uncertain. Rumours linking him to Q36.5 Pro Cycling have been dismissed, as the Swiss team has finalized its 2025 roster, including the addition of INEOS rider Tom Pidcock.

An impressive career

Viviani departs with an impressive palmarès, which includes 89 career wins. Some of his notable road achievements include the 2019 European road title, five Giro d’Italia stage wins, three at the Vuelta a España, and a stage victory at the 2019 Tour de France, as well as the Olympic gold in 2016 in the omnium.

The worst-kept secret in cycling is finally out

His British teammate Pidcock made headlines after INEOS Grenadiers announced that Tom Pidcock would be leaving the team. For months, he’d been linked to Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, with Daniel Benson even calling it a done deal on the same day. On Friday, it became official. He’s headed to the squad, joining Canadian Nick Zukowsky, by the way. Rumours of his departure swirled after his non-selection on the eve of Il Lombardia.

“This isn’t just a change of jersey; it’s the start of something special,” Pidcock said in a statement. “The chance to work with a team that’s growing, with incredible partners and brands, is something that motivates me. I can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together.”

There were rumours the Italian hoped to race again at the Olympics in 2028–where he would be approaching the big 4-0. So he may have plans for another team for 2025, but as of Tuesday, has not announced it.
