Steve Smith Memorial wraps up Canada Cup downhill series

The final round of 2024 Canada Cup downhill racing returned to Mount Washington for the Stevie Smith Memorial DH. Always a difficult track, the Stevie Smith DH added some variable weather over the weekend to keep racers on their toes. The sun was out for finals, and the final DH podiums of the year as new Canada Cup champs were crowned on Vancouver Island.

Elite men and women

In a wildly close elite men’s race, Patrick Laffey rebounded from a rough seeding run to take the final Canada Cup win of 2024. His 3:25.44 beat out Henry Sherry by a razor-thin 0.30 seconds. Seth Sherlock also finished within a second of the win, 0.67 seconds back of Laffey after toughing out the brutal Monster Mile course. Gabe Neuron and Ethan Donohoe round out the extended podium.

In the elite women’s race, past Canada Cup champ Ainhoa Ijurko took a commanding win at the Steve Smith Memorial race. She finished 14.78 seconds up on Kaylee Sherlock in second place with Canada Cup leader coming into the final round, Bailey Goldstone finishing in third.

Junior Men and Women

In the junior men’s race, Maximiliano Caro Labbe just edges out Outlaw United’s Jake Polito for the win. Jonah Rickard takes the final podium spot in third.

Mhairi Smart of Whistler, B.C. wins the junior women’s race at Mount Washington. Emily Wilson and Kate Brenan round out the junior women’s podium at the final Canada Cup of the year.

Under-17 and under-15

Ryder Wilson set the fourth fastest men’s time of the day, with only the three fastest elite men beating his time of 3:27.62. That gave Wilson a massive 8.45-second winning margin and, as he was already leading the Canada Cup series, clinched the season title. Jack McCredie and Mateo Quist round out the under-17 men’s podium at the Stevie Smith Memorial DH.
