On Thursday, the Graubünden cantonal police opened an investigation into the crash that involved Gino Mäder and American Magnus Sheffield. At the time, Mäder was hospitalized in the ICU of the Chur hospital. Since then, the Bahrain-Victorious succumbed to his injuries and died on Friday morning. According to a report in the Swiss outlet Rsi.ch, the police are looking to, “Establish the exact dynamics of the facts, and ask any witnesses to come forward.”

The 26-year-old Swiss cyclist went off the road after losing control on a left-hand corner on a very fast downhill from the Albula Pass. He would end up in the escarpment below, in a river. He was initially unresponsive, and was immediately resuscitated and taken to hospital.

Mäder’s team, Bahrain-Victorious posted the news about his death on Friday.
