Tadej Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel, two of the finest pros at the moment, did some absolutely nutso training rides on Tuesday. Pog, who fractured his wrist at Liège–Bastogne–Liège, only began riding outside recently. But he definitely kept his fitness riding on the rollers, judging by his recent ride.
Pog making up for lost miles
The UAE Emirates rider banged off 156.55 km, at altitude, in 40 degrees Celisus in Spain. Oh and he climbed over 4,000 m and still managed to average 30.5km/h. The Slovenian titled the ride “Vrum vrum.” On a call to the media on Friday, he gave an update about how his prep has been going. “I lost some training and couldn’t do much on the road in the last four weeks. So I need to focus more on the intervals and long training sessions outside,” he said. “I’ve been training quite well on the home trainer and running. The shape is not as bad as I thought it was going to be after training on the rollers, and the wrist is getting better every day. And now I’ll try to get as much as possible out of this camp here.”
Evenepoel does his own version of Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Meanwhjle Evenepoel is ramping up for the Tour de Suisse. Having left the Giro d’Italia early due to testing positive for COVID-19, the Belgian has rearranged his racing season. He posted about a “personalized Liège-Bastogne-Liège” on Strava.
The Soudal Quick-Step rode 231 km through the Ardennes, taking in 20 climbs along the way on his seven-hour ride. That’s 4,335 m of climbing! He made sure to take in many of the climbs from the Classic, like the Col de La Redoute, the Roche-aux Faucons, Côte de Stockeu and Col du Rosier during his seven-hour ride.
