Wahoo Fitness’ roots lie in a simple ANT+ dongle, which allowed the company’s founder and CEO, Chip Hawkins, to pair external sensors to his smartphone so it could be used as a head unit replacement. This problem-solving ethos is what the Atlanta, Georgia-based technology outfit has built its brand upon – and is now producing everything from dual-band sensors to the best turbo trainers and one of the best exercise bikes.
The key to all of Wahoo’s gear is that it’s easy to use, reliable, and seamlessly connects to third parties. The head units are intuitive and offer best-in-class app integration, and the wheel-on, direct-drive smart trainers and smart bike are universally compatible with indoor cycling apps, including Zwift, TrainerRoad and The Sufferfest – which is now known as SYSTM after it was bought and relaunched by Wahoo. Other acquisitions include that of the Speedplay brand, which was relaunched as Wahoo Speedplay, meaning Wahoo now offers some of the best road bike pedals too.
One of Wahoo’s greatest strengths as a brand is its pricing control. While most brands are susceptible to discounting (you’ll often find Amazon, Wiggle, and so on slashing the prices of Garmin computers, for example) it’s very rare to find discounts on Wahoo products. That’s especially true of the core range of products such as computers and turbo trainers, although there are discounts on some products if you buy them as bundles with, for example, a Kickr Climb or a Tickr heart rate monitor.
