The current GC standings in the 2022 Tour de France after stage 5

Stage 5 of the 2022 Tour de France saw a dramatic change in the general classification, with Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) and Ben O’Connor (AG2R-Citroën) being dropped from the main group on the road – securing Tadej Pogačar’s position as the favourite for the yellow jersey while Van Aert remains in yellow.

In a stage beset with incidents and accidents, there was drama early on when Van Aert was caught out in a crash. He managed to ride back on to the bunch but with 11 sectors of cobbles still to contend with but it was a nervous start for Team Jumbo-Visma.

O’Connor had a puncture following the first cobbled sector and was on the back foot after that, losing handfuls of time in a Tour that has already seen him struggle.

Things went from bad to worse for Jumbo-Visma as Jonas Vingegaard suffered from multiple mechanical issues, forcing Van Aert to drop back and help him back on. As they were chasing, Roglič crashed and fell behind Van Aert’s group. Another team of domestiques was despatched to help him, however with Pogačar in attacking mode, it was always going to be difficult to limit losses. With Roglič reportedly resetting his own dislocated shoulder, it was not to be for the Slovenian, who lost around two minutes to his younger rival.

Van Aert pulled the main group of GC contenders, including Jonas Vingegaard to within touching distance of Pogačar with a strong late drive, and ensured that the GC contest remained alive in the process.

Van Aert moved into the overall race lead after sprinting to second on stage 2, and he maintained that lead with his second-place finish on stage 3. He broke his run of second places on stage 4 with a commanding victory in Calais, and he remains in yellow following his heroic effort today.

Behind him, it’s all change. Two of the day’s breakaway riders move into second and third place – Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) sits at 13 seconds behind Van Aert with Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team TotalEnergies) a second behind at 14 seconds.

Defending champion Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) drops down to fourth place, but moves closer to Van Aert and further away from his chasing GC rivals at 19 seconds.

Behind Pogačar, Jumbo-Visma’s Jonas Vingegaard drops to seventh, but stays in contention at 40 seconds back, 21 behind Pogačar. Roglič drops down to 44th, over two minutes behind.
