The Cycling Podcast / Life in the Peloton – Matt Keenan

Mitch Docker meets a man whose voice will be familiar to cycling fans throughout the world. For many, Matt Keenan is the voice of the Tour de France thanks to his lead commentary work which is heard by viewers in the US, Australia and anywhere that takes the world feed from race organiser ASO.

Matt grew up in the same neighbourhood as Mitch and also dreamed of being a professional cyclist. When he realised he didn’t have the engine for Life in the Peloton he switched his sights to a job in the commentary booth.

Mitch gets to the heart of the commentator’s job – the difficulty of identifying riders, explaining a complex sport to a broad audience and striking up a rapport with a co-commentator. Sit back, relax and enjoy a conversation with one of the most recognised voices of cycling.

Theme music
The theme music for Life in the Peloton was composed by Pete Shelley, who was lead singer of the punk band Buzzcocks. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4’s coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete’s widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. To hear more about the music, listen to the Andre Greipel episode of Life in the Peloton.
