The Cycling Podcast / The Closest* Ever Paris-Roubaix

It’s another bumper episode of The Cycling Podcast with plenty to pick and choose from if that’s what you wish to do. The main focus is Paris-Roubaix, the Queen of the Classics, the Hell of the North, so let’s run through what’s in the show.

00:00 Introduction
Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe as they catch up with each other after a week of self-distancing. And hear from Team CCC’s Greg Van Avermaet, winner of the virtual Lockdown Tour of Flanders.

17:28 Francois’ song
This week it’s an homage to Paris-Roubaix and Australian winner Mat Hayman with a cover of AC-DC’s Highway to Hell from François Thomazeau, performing live in Marseille.

21:10 Part one (Duration 43:50) Roubaix memories
We take a meandering journey across the cobblestones of north-eastern France with an assortment of memories from the pavé. There’s the man of many nationalities, 1994 winner Andrei Tchmil and his legendary directeur sportif Jef Braeckevelt. But who was the Little Mouse? We recall some modern editions and ask who is the best Paris-Roubaix rider of all-time. Trek-Segafredo’s Luca Guercilena makes a case for Fabian Cancellara being the best modern-day rider and Lionel remembers stuffing his face with savoury treats (of course he did) at the final feed station when he rode the cyclo-sportive in 2008.

1:05:00 Part two (Duration 35:00) The closest* ever Paris-Roubaix
We catch up with Team CCC’s sports director Steve Bauer, who was second in one of the closest editions ever, when he was beaten by around a centimetre by Belgian Eddy Planckaert in the Roubaix velodrome in 1990. But, cycling being cycling, the closest ever finish might actually be the second closest…

1:40:00 Lockdown Larry
A sleepy edition of Lockdown Larry with AG2R-La Mondiale rider Larry Warbasse.

1:43:13 Part three (Duration 31:15) The coronavirus section
What’s the latest in the world of cycling? We recap the news and also hear from Trek-Segafredo’s young rider Charlie Quarterman, whose debut season had got off to a promising start before racing ground to a halt. If you want to hear the full interview with Charlie, we’ll post it on our website thecyclingpodcast.com
