The world’s lightest mountain bike

The world's lightest mountain bike

The folks over at Dream Build MTB never cease to amaze. Their latest build? What they’re claiming to be the world’s lightest mountain bike. It would be hard to argue with them. Because not only are they the ultimate bike nerds, they also just built a bike that weighs 5.68 kg or 12.52 pounds.

The build

We’ve all thought about a build like this; scour the world, looking for the lightest parts and never consider price. So to see it finally done is amazing.

Starting with a Mondraker Podium RR SL medium frame, this beautifully shot video last 14 minutes and it’s mesmerizing.

Watching Gee Milner put this bike together is like a sauna for a bike enthusiast’s eyes. So relaxing. Soothing. Wait what? What is going on with that shifter? Are those seat guts made of string (11:42)? What? Those look like a nightmare to work on.

Featuring a heck of a lot of carbon (even the crank spindle and thru axle) and some mystery parts (what chain is that?), this is without a doubt a master build.

What did it cost? There’s no mention of money. But that’s not the point of the project is it?

Legal?

Of course, the reality is, this bike is pretty dang specialized. There’s no dropper post. It’s a hard tail. And even road bikes in the UCI need to weigh at least 6.8 kg. But don’t let reality spoil the dream. Of course you wouldn’t take this down Squamish’s In-N-Out Burger, nor would you float over any road gaps with it. But the exercise of building this bike is a feat in itself. Milner claims it took two years to pull the project together. And frankly, we thank him for the effort. It’s a beautiful bike and a worthwhile dream.
