Toronto police are asking anyone who may have witnessed a hit-and-run of a cyclist to contact them so the suspect can be tracked down.
David Shellnutt, a.k.a. The Biking Lawyer, is representing cyclist who was seriously injured and hospitalized in what appears to be an intentional hit and run on August 25, 2023.
“We ask for the public’s help in identifying this person and sharing their information with police. Together, we can combat road violence and ensure those who present a threat to all of us are apprehended and their driving privileges suspended,” he said in a statement.
Cyclist severely injured
The cyclist is home from the hospital, but their injuries are severe and orthopaedic in nature. “They are hopeful that members of the public can help identify this incredibly dangerous person to face justice and keep others safe,” Shellnutt continued. “Hit and runs are terrifyingly common not only in Toronto but across the province. The result in not only serious injury but often they leave victims without recourse in accessing insurance benefits easily or finding any sense of justice. It is times like these that calls for a Vulnerable Road Users Law are painfully important.”
Video of incident
There is some dashcam footage of the incident, which Shellnutt says is a huge help when it comes to these sorts of crimes.
“Video recording devices on bikes or in cars often play a critical role in either identifying perpetrators of road violence or at least demonstrating what victims have experienced so that even if they can’t access the driver’s insurance benefits, at least they can more easily apply for government support through the Motor Vehicle Accident Claims fund,” he added.
Failed to remain at scene
According to Toronto Police, they received a report of a fail to remain personal injury collision involving a motorcycle and a cyclist travelling eastbound on Dundas Street East at River Street.
The suspect was on a black/silver motorcycle, with the operator wearing a yellow flip shield helmet, and was eastbound in the bike lanes. The motorcycle hit a cyclist in the bike lane, and the cyclist sustained serious injuries. the motorcycle then fled the scene.
Police are asking local residents, businesses and drivers, who may have security or dash camera footage of the area or incident, to contact investigators.
