On paper, Team DSM’s Lorena Wiebes was definitely favoured to win, and she delivered. The Dutch rider will now wear the coveted yellow jersey after an aggressive and exciting first stage through the streets of Paris.
Despite a flurry of attacks during the 81.6km race, it would ultimately all come down to a mass gallop to the line once Gladys Verhulst (Le Col-Wahoo) was caught with just 2 km to go.

Jumbo-Visma, the dominant team of the men’s TdF, put star rider Marianne Vos in a perfect spot as the sprint started. Vos went eatly, but Wiebes matched her and won by a solid bike length. Team SD Worx rider Lotte Kopecky would come in third. SD Worx also wore special jerseys designed by Amy Pieters, which had the words “Stay Strong Amy” on it. Pieters suffered a terrible crash in December and is still recovering.
