The 2024 Tour de l’Abitibi got underway on Monday with a Challenge Sprint elimination series. Teams from Canada, the United States, Japan, Mexico, Colombia, and France, as well as eight regional teams from Canada and two from the United States, will compete for various jerseys. This year, for the first time in several decades, two regional teams from Abitibi will participate in the Tour de l’Abitibi Glencore.
The Abitibi Sprint Challenge, while not affecting the general classification of the Tour, provided an impressive spectacle in the elimination sprint format. Mikael Guilbault, representing Team Canada, took the win. Victor Manuel Mendoza Ruiz from Colombia secured second place, followed closely by Lee Cullen Darr from the American team Vantaggio Fitness & Nutrition, who completed the podium in third place and Nathaniel Fry (Ignite Cycling) in fourth.
The first stage of the Tour de l’Abitibi begins Tuesday, in Rouyn-Noranda, Que. Stage 1 is 115.6 km and heads to Val-d’Or.
