On Tuesday the Tour de l’Abitibi in Quebec had the first proper road stage, after the Sprint Challenge on Monday. It was 115.6 km from Rouyn-Noranda to Val-d’Or, passing through Malartic.
In the general classification, French rider Ellande Larronde took both the brown jersey and the orange jersey, awarded to the overall leader and points leader, respectively. Ben Morin from PNW Racing Fondation claimed the blue jersey for the best young rider. Japanese cyclist Genji Iwamura won the polka dot jersey for the best climber.
The King of the Mountains prizes were won by Genji Iwamura and Ben Morin. Oliver Scott from the American team NorthStar Development Cycling took the first intermediate sprint, while Carl Truffer from the Canadian team won the second. The mayor’s sprints in Rouyn-Noranda were won by Canadian Mikael Guilbault and William Bourbonnais from Alliance Club Cycliste.
The peloton was active with several breakaways. During the finishing circuit, the riders completed three laps with an average stage speed of 46.9 km/h. Ellande Larronde crossed the Agnico Eagle finish line first, with nearly a 20-second lead, putting France at the top of the team classification.
Stage 2 begins in Amos at 5:00 PM, covering a distance of 102 km, and finishing in Val-d’Or.
