Uno-X rider Niklas Eg to retire from pro cycling follow heart issues

Niklas Eg, of Uno-X Pro Cycling, has been forced to retire due to a series of heart-related issues. This announcement follows Wesley Kreder of Cofidis, who had to quit the sport after experiencing a heart attack at the end of August.

Danish rider Eg, 28 participated in his final race at La Route d’Occitanie in France in mid-June. Shortly thereafter, he encountered inexplicable instances of irregular heart rate during his training sessions, leading to his unfortunate departure from the world of competitive cycling. His medical team has still not determined the cause of the irregular heart rate.

A history of professional cyclists who died from heart attacks

Another pro cyclist, Nathan Van Hooydonck of Jumbo-Visma was hospitalized after a car accident that occurred on Sept. 12 when he veered into traffic due to a medical problem. The 27-year-old Belgian cyclist had an internal defibrillator (ICD) implanted to address potential future cardiac arrhythmias, but also had to retire from the sport.

In 2022, Sonny Cobrelli, the winner of the 2021 Paris-Roubaix was forced to retire due to issues with his heart. His season was cut short due to a collapse at the Volta a Catalunya when he suffered a cardiac arrhythmia and cardiac arrest which sent him to hospital.

In July, Israel – Premier Tech announced that Sep Vanmarcke would retire from cycling immediately due to medical reasons. The team announced that doctors had detected an abnormally high heart rate while on the bike. He then underwent testing including a cardiac MRI which then confirmed that there was a presence of scar tissue.
