Ashlin Barry shines in his second elite race…as an actual elite

A dramatic day unfolded on the roads of Croatia with the Poreč Classic. In the men’s race, American Viggo Moore, riding for Austria’s Tirol KTM Cycling Team, took a solo victory. Slovenian riders Mihael Stajnar (Pogi Team Gusto Ljubljana) and Gal Oblak (Factor Racing) completed the podium. Visma-Lease a Bike’s Ashlin Barry finished 9th.

Fog and crashes

The 141.6 km route from Poreč to Tar was marked by fog and a whole bunch of crashes that split the peloton. Early in the race, Moore joined a breakaway that built a three-minute advantage. The American came in solo, four seconds ahead of Stajnar, and eight ahead of Oblak. The bunch sprint for fourth was won by Marceli Bogusławski (ATT Investments).

Barry, who was born in Spain and has Canadian and American citizenship due to his parents, former pros Michael and Dede, races for the Visma-Lease a Bike Conti squad. Although he has raced several elite races as a junior, including the track worlds, this is his first year in the pro ranks as an elite.

Two other Canucks in the mix

There were two other Canadians racing in the second day of action in Croatia: Tudor Pro Cycling’s Mathias Guillemette and 18-year-old Monty Rigby, who races for racewinner’s Tirol KTM Cycling Team.

At the first race in Croatia, Guillemette finished fifth at a weird finish of the UMAG Classic – where two riders won. The 142.3 km race ended in a bunch sprint.

Race officials said the photo finish was too close to call. Instead, they gave out two first places: Adam Bradáč (Factor Racing) and Dušan Rajović (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali). Guillemette said the photo finish wasn’t ideal. “It looks like it was taken on a phone,” the Trois-Rivières native said. “The person was probably standing about a metre and a half before the line, so the angle is off. They’re looking at the front wheels from an angle, which makes them appear tied when they clearly aren’t.”

In a few weeks, Barry will “race up” with the WorldTour Visma squad at the Grand Prix de Denain in France.
