British phenom Cat Ferguson crashes out of Giro on Stage 1

The first stage of any Grand Tour is always a nervous one. Saturday’s opening day of racing at the Giro d’Italia women’s edition showed why. A wild stage led to an unexpected DQ for Lorena Wiebes. Before that, British phenom Cat Ferguson was involved in a quite serious crash on the roads.

Movistar’s 20-year-old star was taken from the scene and taken to hospital. Her Movistar team updated that she remains in hospital under observation.

“Following an incident during today’ stage, Cat Ferguson has been transported to hospital for further medical assessment after the crash. We will provide an update as soon as any more details become available.”

Later, Movistar updated on Ferguson’s condition.

“Ferguson remains in stable condition in hospital. Medical examinations have ruled out any brain injury as well as cranio-cervical bone injury. Cat will continue to undergo observation and furhter assessments while additional tests are carried out.”

Stage one racing covered 139 km from Cesenatico to Ravenna.

Canada has a large contingent in Italy. Alison Jackson (St Michel – Preference Home – Auber93) who has a Grand Tour stage win to her name from the 2024 Vuelta, just missed the top-10, finishing in 12th. EF Education-Oatly’s Alex Volstad was also in the mix, in 15th. Volstad sits third overall in the young riders competition, so she’s well within reach of the white jersey.
