Building future champions: Durham Shredders’ Devo Racing Team

The Durham Shredders MTB Club has long been a hub for developing mountain biking talent in Ontario. The Devo Racing Team’s goal is to empower U19 and U23 athletes to compete on national and international stages. This program isn’t just about racing—it’s about cultivating excellence, resilience and teamwork while fostering a supportive community. If you want to get involved, the 2025 application form is here and is open until Dec. 23, 2024.

Empowering the next generation

The Devo Racing Team’s mission is clear: to help emerging riders reach their fullest potential. With a foundation rooted in passion, motivation, collaboration, resilience and kindness, this program aims to develop not just world-class athletes but well-rounded individuals. As part of the broader Durham Shredders MTB Club, Devo athletes take on the important role of mentoring younger riders and encouraging more girls and women to enter the sport.

“Our goal is to create a team dynamic that’s both high-performing and supportive,” says the program’s organizer Kevin Haviland. “It’s about achieving something special together.”

Comprehensive support for elite athletes

The Devo Racing Team offers a carefully structured program that combines training, race support and a team-oriented approach to competition. Athletes benefit from:

Race support: Access to a trailer stocked with tools and parts, feed zone assistance and mechanical support on race day.
Training opportunities: Weekly group rides, technical training sessions with a coach and early-season training camps.
Logistical ease: Coordinated team travel, housing for events and ground transportation options.
Educational resources: Team webinars on nutrition, sports psychology and goal-setting to help athletes thrive both on and off the bike.

Athletes are expected to have their own personal coach, but the Shredders program provides access to a Training Peaks plan if needed, as well as the indoor training facility in Whitby for winter preparation.

Building a team dynamic

Durham Shredders places a strong emphasis on creating a positive team culture. Athletes are encouraged to collaborate, support one another and embody the values of the program. Regular meetings and clear communication ensure that every team member feels connected and empowered.
