Derek Gee-West is getting his first start with his new Lidl-Trek team earlier than expected. Only two days earlier, but in a very different scenario.
The Canadian had planned to start his season at the Volta ao Algarve on Feb. 18. With the illness of his teammate Giulio Ciccone, Gee-West is headed to UAE Tour instead. Racing in UAE starts February 16 and runs through to the 22nd.

Ciccone, like Gee-West, has the Giro d’Italia as a major goal for the season. With the Italian out of the UAE Tour, Lidl-Trek needed to fill a GC spot and the Canadian got the call-up.
Most importantly, of course, it means fans could get to see Lidl-Trek’s second stab at a Canadian national champions jersey two days earlier than expected. Gee-West told Canadian Cycling Magazine a redesign was in the works. But the official design has yet to surface.
UAE Tour will mark Gee-West’s debut with Lidl-Trek.
