Flueckiger fires first in Vallnord with XCC World Cup win

Flueckiger fires first in Vallnord with XCC World Cup win

If fans were expecting a second round of the grudge match between Switzerland’s top cross country men on Friday, Mathias Flueckiger was ready to oblige. The Thomus Maxon racer stormed back from last week’s controversy to take an XCC World Cup win. More than a strong result, it could foreshadow another battle between Flueckiger and Nino Schurter. When Flueckiger wins a World Cup XCC, he has a very strong record of following that with an XCO World Cup win on Sunday.

Sunday is, of course, the race Schurter will be targeting. A win then is what the veteran Swiss star needs to surpass Julien Absalon in the career-win’s standings. They are both tied at 33 wins at the moment.

On the women’s side, Alessandra Keller made it two XCC World Cup wins for the Swiss in Andorra, and for the Thomus Maxon team. Keller was so close to victory in last week’s XCO. Buoyed by that result, Keller stormed to the win Friday ahead of  Anne Terpstra (Ghost Factory) and a resurgent Rebecca McConnell (Primaflor Mondraker). With that result, McConnell re-takes the World Cup overall leader’s jersey from Loana Lecomte (Canyon) who has opted not to race this weekend in Andorra.

Canadians in Andorra

Laurie Arseneault (Canyon MTB) lead the Canadian effort in Vallnord, finishing 26th.  Sandra Walter (Liv Canada) followed close behind in 30th
