The Spring Classics have been etched into cycling folklore for more than a century, with each race having its own unique history and tale.
From the countless riders whose careers have been shaped by their Classics exploits to the iconic imagery that surrounds the races. Even the humble, solitary cobblestone – to the uninitiated it represents a piece of antiquated road engineering but to lovers of the sport, a cobblestone tells a story of the battleground of the hardest of races on the most unforgiving terrain.
It’s during the Spring Classics when the cobbled one-day races take centre stage, with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad at Opening Weekend kickstarting over a month of action on the cobblestones of northern Europe, culminating with the cobbled Monuments of the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. That’s swiftly followed by the Ardennes Classics, tackled on hillier terrain but just as demanding and hard to win – they’ll draw to a close at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
