Keegan Swenson turns Specialized Off-Road into a super team

Keegan Swenson turns Specialized Off-Road into a super team

When Santa Cruz shuttered the very successful htSQD gravel team, rumours were already swirling that star rider, Keegan Swenson was on the move. Now, those rumours are confirmed. The reigning marathon XC world champion will join Specialized’s Off-Road team, turning it into a super team. One that, especially in the wake of htSQD’s closure, has the firepower to subdue the competition.

Specialized levels up

Specialized Off-Road was already a powerful team. Swenson joins Sofia Gomez Villafane, Matt Beers, Annika Langvad and two yet-to-be-announced riders. As a six-rider squad, Specialized will have significant numbers and pedigree in the gravel peloton and at XC marathon races around the world.

Gomez Villafane is in her sixth year with Specialized, is the three-time defending Life Time Grand Prix champion, won the Traka 200 in 2025 and has two Cape Epic wins among other palmares. Langvad rejoined Specialized after a long break, bringing with her experience as a six-time Cape Epic winner, multiple time world champion in mountain bike disciplines and general icon of the sport. Matt Beers is also a Cape Epic champion and very experienced endurance racer in gravel and mountain biking.

Adding Swenson to the mix will make Specialized hard to compete with at any event the team chooses to start.

Long-rumoured move confirmed

Swenson’s move to Santa Cruz was long rumoured. It made sense in a few ways. He raced Cape Epic with Specialized’s Matthew Beers. This year he married Specialized’s Sofia Gomez Villafane. He also won XC Marathon world championships, and Specialized always seems interested in buying proven talent like that.

Swenson’s ability to race gravel at the highest levels as well as earn accolades on the mountain bike surely makes him all the more appealing to the brand.

Likewise for Swenson, Specialized’s ability to offer equipment and a level of support to match his expanding ambitions likely makes the Big Red S one of the few brands that could offer the level of support, and likely pay, that he needs to continue competing at that level.
