Well, this is sort of nuts.
After a chaotic first stage of the Giro, things got way crazier.
Lorena Wiebes won the stage, but was disqualified and removed from the race just hours after winning the opening stage and the maglia rosa.
The SD Worx-Protime sprinter took the win and pink jersey on Saturday. The Dutch super star powered to the dub in the bunch sprint to take both the stage win and the race lead.
But the celebrations were short-lived. And what transpired today is very much unprecedented in pro cycling.
A statement released by race officials later in the evening confirmed that Wiebes had been disqualified under UCI regulation 2.12.007-2.2 after her bike failed a post-race inspection. According to the organizers, the bike did not comply with the UCI’s minimum weight requirement and was found to be under the legal limit.
The ruling not only strips Wiebes of her stage victory but also removes her from the race entirely. This is clearly an ongoing story.
Surely her team will appeal this decision. But man, what a way to start one of the biggest races in the world…
