Mischa Bredewold kept her run alive at Itzulia Women alive Friday, taking the opening stage for the time. The SD Worx–Protime rider broke clear from a late five-rider move featuring Antonia Niedermaier, Lauren Dickson, Yara Kastelijn and Riejanne Markus before timing her sprint perfectly in the finale.
The win marked Bredewold’s fifth career stage dub in the Basque race in just three seasons.
The Canucks
There was a strong Canadian presence in Spain. World champ Magdeleine Vallières-Mill (EF Education-Oatly) was right there on the tough slopes, ultimately finishing 12th. She is now 12th overall, just 18 seconds behind.
Mara Roldan (Team Picnic PostNL), in just her second race back since recovering from her concussion after being hit by a driver, is making the most of the stage race. The Whitehorse native is getting valuable race miles in as she gets set for bigger goals this year. She finished 66th, in the same group as Alexandra Volstad (EF Education-Oatly), 79th. National TT champ Olivia Baril (Movistar Team) unfortunately did not finish.
Stage 2 is from Abadiño to Amorebieta-Etxano for a total of 138 km, and another hilly day for the women. Bredewold also has the points jersey, with Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Premier Tech) leading the QOM.
